I lay on the bed and lost myself in the stories. I liked that. Books were safer than other people anyway.”
— Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Hello dear readers. I know it’s a little strange for a writer to become social and share her writing with the world that is outside of the page and the solitude of reading, but I’ve learned over the course of my MFA that readings are, well simply put, pretty fun. There’s something different when a space becomes a safe haven for sharing literature–it’s almost magical.
So, here are some upcoming readings/literary events I’d love to invite you to! I’m excited for each of them, and although readings are still pretty nerve-racking for me, I’ve come to learn to enjoy them, especially as a fiction writer. Readings, if anything, create such a surreal space: people conjoining over wine and words. I remember PAWA’s last reading at LitCrawl, and how at last minute, we had to change our venue to a parklet in the middle of the Mission District. It was a wonderful change of scenery, because as people passed us, the words of our writers stopped them in their paths. They waited and digested the words. The cars honked and their blinking lights filled that public space with a gradient hue of red and the city life.
And with that, here’s a quick breakdown!
1. Wildness of Mind & Word: Mills MFA craft of prose reading
Wednesday, December 4, at 7pm
The first one celebrates my time with the fellow craft of prose writers from Mills College at the local bookstore in Laurel Heights.
2. Writing Without Walls: DEC SPIRITS
Thursday, December 12, 2013, at 7pm
Cafe du Soleil
The second one, Writing Without Walls: Dec Spirits, is something I’m so excited for–I just got some good news from Jeff Von Ward, so more news to come… I highly suggest you apply for the reading series–they’re still accepting readers till Monday, midnight, on Dec 2.
3. The Window Literary Salon: 2nd Annual Reading
Venue: Oakland Hills, CA
I’m co-planning the third reading, The Window Literary Salon, and it’s our second reading this year! If you’re vying to read, please contact me!
4. AWP Offsite Reading: Mills Women Writers
Thursday, February 27, 2014, time: TBA
Hollow Earth Radio
The fourth reading is at AWP–that monster of a beast. I’m co-planning the reading with some wonderful Mills friends, so more details to come.
5. Bernal Yoga Literary Series: 10th Anniversary Season
Saturday, April 5, 2014, time: TBA
Bernal Yoga Studio
Last but not least, I was invited to read for the Bernal Yoga Literary Series, and I cannot be more excited. I’m reading with some pretty heart-stopping people: Tom Kealey and Brian Komei Dempster, to name a few. It’s upcoming, planned for April 5, 2014, so please come back soon for more details!
Hope to see you there!
